Winter services - Fruit tree pruning

Winter Fruit Tree Pruning

At Hislop & Co. we offer fruit tree pruning as part of our Winter services. Pruning at this time of year, when the leaves have fallen, gives you a chance to see the overall shape and structure of your tree. The benefit of this is that it provides the opportunity to shape your trees to the size you want, keeping your gardens looking well maintained and tidy. As well as this, Winter pruning encourages vigorous growth with new and numerous shoots. Although pruning apples in the Summer does encourage fruiting and flowering, Winter pruning creates new shoots and consequently more fruit. Let us do all the hard work for you and leave you to enjoy your fruit trees!

About our Winter Fruit Tree Pruning

Our clients normally require our pruning services for trees such as apples, pears and quince. We advise that you are not tempted to prune too soon in the belief that the warmer weather will be better for the tree. This is because pruning apple trees in the Autumn can encourage them to send out fresh new shoots that aren’t tough enough to withstand cold weather. Therefore, we believe it is better to wait until the leaves have fallen off. This means that they’re fully dormant and won’t grow any more until the weather warms up. Pruning apple trees in frosty weather does no harm whatsoever. As long as they’re dormant they won’t mind a little surgery, no matter how low the temperature drops.

We carry out our Winter pruning normally with sharp secateurs. For larger branches or deadwood, our skilled staff will use a silky tree pruning saw. We cater for all residential gardens and commercial grounds in the Hertfordshire and surrounding area.
