Power of Planting

The Power of Planting…….

If you are looking to fill empty flower beds or you are simply having a change and you’ve created a space, it’s the perfect opportunity to think of it as a blank canvas, ready to be filled with colour!

If you are unfamiliar with plants it may be an idea to buy them in full bloom so you get a sense of the size and colour options before planting takes place. This will also help when creating your design scheme, a tip is to have all larger shrubs i.e Photinia or Ceanothus at the back of the beds as these will provide structure and height while the front of the bed can be filled with Hydrangeas and Cytisus to provide framework and density.

However, if you aren’t looking for shrubs/plants that create height or possible shading and smaller shrubs are for you, the Evergreens are a flower bed staple, they can be planted closely together giving fantastic ground coverage and a blanket of rich colour which will brighten any space!

Adding or changing existing planting can make all the difference to gardens or larger grounds as it adds a variation of colour, textures and creates an interesting focal point that will change and develop with the passing seasons.

Examples of different bed layouts, shrubs used and finishing touches can be seen in pictures that are from some of the commercial sites Hislop and Co maintain.
