All Hail The Hedge

Why Plant a Hedge?

Hedges, fences and walls all provide boundaries around our gardens, but hedges have many advantages over the man-made alternatives.

Here are our thoughts as to why and what they are…..

Welcoming Insects, Butterflies and Birds into your Garden!

Hanging a bird feeder on a wall if a hedge isn’t practical in your garden is great but it doesn’t compare to the hive of activity berries on a Spotted Laurel or Holly can create, or the benefits of seasonal insects in Lavender or Hawthorns. As well as feeding these birds and insects they also are a form of shelter and housing, always check before pruning that fledglings have left the nest!

Protection From The Elements!

Hedges will be guaranteed to provide shelter from winds, unlike a wall or fence, which just divert the wind upwards, a hedge filters and calms it, leading to improved circulation around your garden. Therefore, this creates better growing conditions as a result of warmer soil. Also if your garden does take a hit from a storm you won’t be out collecting your fence panels from the neighbour’s garden!!

Environmental Perks!

The density, maturity and height of your hedge can significantly help with reducing noise levels, within the boundary of your hedge it can be reduced dramatically. Hedges planted for sounds proofing as also great at absorbing air pollution so these are particularly useful near herb/vegetable gardens or children’s play areas.

Framing Your Masterpiece!

The consistent flowing dark background of an established hedge can focus gardeners/visitor’s eyes to the forefront of the garden. It also creates a dark canvas for colourful bedding plants and striking flowers to pop out from. They can enhance the feel of the garden and give existing borders and shrubbery great structure.

The Chameleon of the Garden!

The forever changing structure and colour of hedges are endless, leaves in shades of green, lime, copper, yellow, auburn, flowers, blossoms, fruits and berries, when chosen correctly and maintained well a hedge is a great reward to a gardener or home owner with colour and life over the seasons.
