Gardening is hardly a straight forward or simple practice – it takes skill, knowledge, dedication and graft to grow flowers and veggies!
While certain advice for gardening can be daunting, some is just plain fun, silly and even mindboggling, BUT because we love all that is gardening we thought we’d share a few weird and wonderful facts with you over the next few weeks……..
- Your Hydrangeas’ are the chameleons of the plant world. Depending on the PH levels in the soil their petals can change colour. More alkaline in the soil will result in a pinker bloom, while an acidic soil will give a blue bloom. Change won’t happen overnight but watching your garden grow is hardly a chore!
- Around 400 years ago a craze called Tulipomania hit Holland and caused an economic downfall as Tulips became so valuable their bulbs were worth more than gold!
- The first type of aspirin, painkiller, fever reducer came from the tree bark of a Willow.
- The first greenhouses in history were built in Rome in A.D. 30 under the orders of Emperor Tiberius who wanted to eat a cucumber a day.
- Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world, it can grow up to 35inces in a single day. Now that’s impressive!
