James Hislop

James Hislop, (N Dip Hort).

Managing Director and Founder

In June 2005, James founded Hislop & Co Horticulture Ltd after finishing a 3-year National Diploma in Horticulture at the renowned Writtle College. Having carried out his work placement with national contractor Frost’s Landscapes in Milton Keynes, James gained considerable experience working on many high profile projects countrywide. It was during these early years that James recognised the substantial business potential for a company delivering high-end garden & grounds maintenance services. After graduating with a first-class distinction, Hislop’s was born.

Nearly 15 years on, the company has grown from strength to strength. James’ role now sees him leading a highly driven and passionate management team who are committed to growing the company through retaining & promoting our own people, providing the best possible service to clients to allow us to retain existing contracts, as well as exploring new and exciting opportunities. He has ultimate responsibility for all finance, sales & marketing matters, as well as keeping the team motivated and on top of their game.

In his spare time, James likes to travel to sunny locations far & wide with his wife and daughter, as well as all things motoring.

Amanda McArthur

Amanda McArthur, BA (Hons).

Operations Director and Partner

Having worked at Hislop & Co since 2015, Amanda was initially recruited as Office Manager and was instrumental in creating working policies and procedures and building the robust and sustainable back office systems needed to drive the business forward. Amanda took on additional operational responsibilities in 2017 and was subsequently promoted to Operations Manager. In recognition of her continued contribution and commitment to the business, Amanda was promoted to Operations Director and made Partner in October 2018.

Amanda now has overall responsibility for the operations and administration of the business. To ensure the business runs smoothly and efficiently, Amanda works closely with the management team, team leaders and administration staff and oversees all day to day operational activities, HR, Health and Safety Management, Quality Assurance, Finance and Payroll for the business.
Amanda has an Honours Degree in business management and possesses strong commercial awareness and significant operations management and leadership experience. Having held multiple management positions across a variety of industries including education, training and pharmaceuticals, Amanda has a proven track record of managing staff at senior management level, improving efficiencies, performance and making cost savings without impacting on service delivery.

In her spare time, Amanda enjoys walking her retired Greyhound, cooking and of course gardening!

Jim Mansfield

Jim Mansfield, (RHS Cert Hort).

Domestic Sales / Schools Contracts Manager

Jim joined Hislop & Co in March 2016 as a Garden Maintenance Assistant having spent all of his working life in Horticulture and Arboriculture. Having several years of practical experience, Jim consolidated his knowledge by gaining a formal RHS Level 2 qualification in Horticulture at the end of 2016. Hislop’s promoted him in Spring 2017 into the role of Team Leader to look after our prestigious independent school sites. These contracts allowed him to experience the world of sports groundsmanship, and channelled him to gain further training in the management of cricket squares, line marking and sports pitches with The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG).

Having successfully managed and worked on these contracts, Jim received further promotion at the end of 2018 into the role of Domestic Sales Manager. This role makes him the first point of contact when meeting clients for an initial consultation at their property, before helping to decide what best suits their needs. Whilst most of his time is taken by meeting new domestic clients and pricing up work, Jim is still very much involved with the management of our independent schools portfolio, and as such holds the title of School Contracts Manager. Jim’s passion lies in all things horticulture, whilst being a key player in growing the company and exploring new and exciting opportunities.

During his spare time, Jim likes to attend seasonal flower shows and exhibitions and carry out gardening at his family home in North Wales.

Lee Elwood

Lee Elwood, City & Guilds (Level 2 Hort).

Estates Contracts Manager

Lee joined the company in June 2019 from a contract landscape maintenance background, having worked in gardening & prestigious grounds maintenance for the last 31 years. Progressing from a gardening apprentice at the tender age of 16, to maintenance manager some 20 years later, Lee has a wealth of horticultural knowledge and experience. He has worked on many prestigious sites from Harrow Independent School, Legoland Windsor, London Olympic village and The Home Office to name a few.

Lee holds certificates in; spraying, specialised machinery operations, working at height, pest control and health & safety management. His role at Hislop’s is to manage our existing estates contracts to make sure that our clients are happy with the service that we are delivering, whilst constantly checking the standards of work being produced by our teams. He also uses his own experience to help new employees understand horticultural best practices.

In his spare time, Lee likes to try his hand at tattooing his friends and family.

Richard Laskey

Richard Laskey

Business Development Manager

Richard has spent the last 30 years in a variety of Sales/Account Management & Business Development roles responsible for delivering aggressive sales targets through opening & building new customer relationships across IT, Education and Telecommunications sectors. These included working for a large Pan European Information Technology Company where he was responsible for creating a new market for their range of solutions throughout the UK. This required achieving order & revenue targets (£2.5M) from the portfolio of services from a defined geographical territory and nominated target accounts of SME and large corporate companies. This required building a sales infrastructure which included telemarketing & sales teams to meet targets and account management.

He joined Hislop’s in June 2019 and is ultimately responsible for understanding business opportunities by identifying new potential clients, delivering telemarketing & marketing activities, arranging initial appointments for the MD to meet potential clients, carry out market research & competitive analysis which essentially manages our sales strategy. His friendly, experienced no-nonsense approach allows Richard to get to grips with what the client is looking for straight away and lays a good foundation for the MD’s initial client meeting. He is very passionate about helping the company grow and plays a key part within his role.

In his spare time, Richard likes to knock a few balls around at his local golf club.

Keith Maloney

Keith Maloney, AAT, CIPP.

Finance Manager

Keith has spent all of his working life in finance and has held a number of positions in various disciplines. He is a hard-working, loyal, and conscientious finance professional, with varied blue-chip company, and SME experience. He is a Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), and the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP).

Keith has been working with Hislop’s since January 2019 and is responsible for all the company day to day finance matters including bookkeeping & payroll.

In his spare time, Keith likes to travel the world with his wife and 3 children, and hates gardening!

Paul McArthur

Paul McArthur

Service Manager

Paul joined the company in January 2019 and is a qualified & experienced mechanic with over 30 years’ experience in all aspects of mechanical engineering. Much of his career stemmed from working on two stroke & motorcycle engines, as well as larger vehicles when needed. He has a natural talent at being able to turn his hand to anything especially when it comes to making improvements and proto-types for new or existing equipment. Paul is responsible for ensuring minimal grounds service delivery downtime by servicing, repairing and safety checking all equipment, plant and vehicles on a regular basis and to a high standard.

In the unlikely event that we have a breakdown with any plant on site, we have the capacity to attend site with a support vehicle to assess and carry out mobile repairs.

Paul is also responsible for managing the activities in the company’s yard and oversees the team’s daily return and storage of vehicles, equipment, materials and disposal of green waste.

In his spare time, Paul likes to ‘tinker’ on vintage motorbikes.

Customer Service Co-ordinators

Our customer service coordinators will be all client’s first point of contact in the office, whether in person, on email or over the phone. They have a very positive, pro-active, friendly approach and are dedicated to making sure every client has the best customer experience possible by way of a smooth running & professional office. They are instrumental in supporting our management team and looking after our client portfolio as well as assisting with accounts and managing general office administration.
